Understanding International City and its 10 country clusters

Dubai International City is one of Dubai's largest and most affordable residential communities, covering 800 hectares in the Al Warsan area of southeast Dubai. Developed by Nakheel Properties, it consists of 10 country-themed residential clusters — China, Persia, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Russia, Morocco, England, and Emirates — plus a Central Business District. With over 485 apartment buildings, it houses one of Dubai's most diverse multicultural populations.

The community's architecture is its identity — each cluster reflects the design language of its namesake country. China Cluster sits adjacent to Dragon Mart with Chinese motifs and the highest foot traffic. Persia Cluster is centrally located with mosaic-detailed buildings. France Cluster features red and grey brickwork with tall French windows and pilasters, and houses Paris Children's Park. England Cluster evokes old London with red-brick Georgian-style façades. Russia Cluster is distinct with bright colours and bold geometric forms, and contains Aster Clinic at V19. The Italy, Spain, Greece, Morocco, and Emirates clusters complete the residential ring, each with distinct stucco, courtyard, or Moorish elements.

The Central Business District (CBD) sits at the core of International City and offers larger apartments with amenities (swimming pools, gyms, private parking) that most cluster buildings lack. Residential rents in International City rank among Dubai's lowest, which is the single biggest reason residents choose to live here — making it Dubai's most cost-conscious community by demographic. A planned "Forbidden City" themed development (240,000 sq m) was paused after the 2008 financial crisis and remains on hold.

The community has no metro station — the closest are Centrepoint and Etisalat (Red Line) about 15–20 minutes away. This means residents rely on buses, taxis, ride-hailing, or personal vehicles. For most full-time residents, monthly car rental works out significantly cheaper than daily Uber for commutes to work in Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Mirdif, or Downtown Dubai. Add to that the new paid parking system from February 2026, and a rental car with strategic use of free Sundays starts to make economic sense over taxi dependency.

What's inside International City?

International City has Dragon Mart 1 and 2 (4,000+ stores, primary Chinese wholesale hub in Dubai), Carrefour Hypermarket, multiple cluster-based mosques, Aster Clinic in Russia cluster, widespread pharmacies, and convenience stores in every cluster. Nearby attractions include Dubai Safari Park (10 min), Dubai Silicon Oasis, and Dubai Academic City.

The retail anchor is Dragon Mart, which sits on the community's southern edge. Dragon Mart 1 (opened 2004) is the world's largest Chinese trading hub outside China — a 1.4 km long dragon-shaped building with 4,000+ stores selling electronics, furniture, fabrics, fashion, food, and bulk wholesale goods. Dragon Mart 2 (opened 2015) extends the complex with Carrefour Hypermarket, a major restaurant zone, and additional retail. Together they provide ~4,500 free customer parking spaces.

Each cluster has its own small commercial hub — convenience stores (LuLu Express, New West Zone, Growth Mart), mini-marts, ethnic grocery shops, restaurants, salons, and laundries. Aster Clinic in Russia cluster (V19) handles family medicine, gynaecology, and laboratory services. Major pharmacies — Life Pharmacy, Aster Pharmacy, Amber Pharmacy — are widespread, including locations inside Dragon Mart 1 and 2. Community mosques include Cabin Mosque (Persia cluster), Masjid-e-Noor (England cluster), and Sheikh Abdel Hameed Masjid (Spain cluster).

For larger needs, International City sits within easy reach of adjacent communities: Dubai Silicon Oasis (8–12 min) for tech offices and additional shopping, Dubai Academic City (12–15 min) for universities, Al Warqa (5–10 min) for additional residential services, and Mirdif City Centre (12–18 min) for a major mall experience. Dubai Safari Park (10 min via E611) offers a family day out with 2,500+ animals.

Driving from International City to the rest of Dubai

International City connects to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311), Emirates Road (E611), and Dubai-Hatta Road. DXB Airport is 20–25 minutes. Downtown is 25–30 minutes. Sharjah is 15–25 minutes via E311 (no Salik). Al Maktoum Airport is 30–40 minutes. Hatta is 60–75 minutes.

The community is well-placed for outbound trips: E311 west takes you to Mirdif, Downtown, Marina, and beyond. E611 north goes to Sharjah without Salik tolls. Dubai-Hatta Road heads east to Hatta. For airport runs, DXB is the closest at 20–25 min. The downside is metro-free transit — without a car, your only options are buses and Uber, which makes monthly rental economics very compelling.
